Согласитесь, что редкий разговор обходится без этих фраз. Но есть ли различие между ними, или они взаимозаменяемы?

Мы пользуемся “ How about ”, для того чтобы предложить какое-нибудь совместное действие или сообщить о каких-нибудь возможностях:

“I’ve got the day off tomorrow. What should we do?” — У меня завтра свободный день. Чем займемся?
“How about spending the day in town?” — Как насчет того, чтобы провести день в центре города?
“Nah. I don’t really feel like traveling.” — Нет. Мне не хочется ехать.
“How about we clean the house?” — Как насчет того, чтобы сделать уборку в доме?
“No way. I want to do something fun.” — Не пойдет. Мне хочется заняться чем— нибудь интересным.
“OK. How about doing some shopping and then seeing a movie?” — Ну ладно. А как насчет того, чтобы пройтись по магазинам, а потом посмотреть фильм?
“Hmm… that sounds good!” — Ммм. Не плохая мысль.

В диалоге, который вы прочитали, “ How about …?” используется, чтобы предложить различные виды времяпровождения.

Обратите внимание на построение фразы:

1) How about + -ing form ( герундий ) — “How about spending…?”

2) местоимение + инфинитив – “How about we clean…?”

В этом диалоге “ What about …?” используется, чтобы сформулировать проблему или негативное отношение.

Грамматическая конструкция строится иначе:

What about + имя существительное — “What about my guitar lesson?”

“HOW ABOUT YOU?” и “WHAT ABOUT YOU?”

В следующих примерах фразы “How about you ?” и “What about you ?” взаимозаменяемы.

“How have you been?” — Как дела?
“Good – a little busy with school. How about you? ” — Нормально. Учеба занимает много времени. А ты как?

“Where do you work?” — Где ты работаешь?
“At the local university. What about you? ” — В местном университете. А ты?

Обе фразы — “ How about you ?” and “ What about you ?” — используются для переадресации вопроса другому человеку.
